Neeko - Base - VFX

Neeko was a tough tomato to develop VFX for! She's a new race in League, has a new source of power, and uses that source of power in her own colorful, unique way. Having a lot of unknowns can be very exciting, and push creativity but can also need a lot more time to develop creative solutions for. Dani, the concept and 3D artist, created amazing concepts that incorporated iconographic/tribal shapes that I wanted to capture which would help bring Neeko into her own realm of magic. I did a lot of explorations via the Q missile. Getting sharp, iconographic shapes to read well in motion is always tricky business. The work definitely paid off and lead to many exciting literal splashes of creativity for Neeko's crazy kit. Neeko wears a flower in her hair which ended up being a huge inspiration for me and give life to a lot of the timing of her spells. Her Q and R are heavily inspired by a colorful mix of a splash of water and blooming flower.

We had big plans for this FX during early ideation, and had several visual spikes using shader solutions. Unfortunately none of them translated well to our engine. This was an alternate solution that still hit our goals

Neeko's Auto Attacks! Her W gives every third attack extra, instant damage making her an important auto attacker too to get max DPS. Her little head frills light up on her W passive activation.

Neeko Q - Blooming Burst!

This is her bread and butter DPS ability. I developed the Q first out of her whole kit to lock down primary and secondary shapes that I could use throughout the rest of her kit.

Neeko W - Shape Splitter 

We wanted to have an exciting color breadth for Neeko, so this ability changed colors a bunch of times haha. Incorporated her passive shapes into this non damaging poof ~

This ability changed a ton during development. An ability that fit within League's snare shape language, animation motion, and transitioned upon hitting two targets made readability a tough potato.

A huge, long, colorful ability. This was very fun to develop for. Many iterations were made for this ability to capture all of the fun, colorful shapes of Neeko.
